You spent months, maybe years, trying to get here. There were appointments, medications, blood draws, procedures, waiting, disappointments, and more waiting.
Then finally, the news you had been hoping for: you’re pregnant.
For many women, pregnancy after IVF brings a mix of excitement, gratitude, fear, and anxiety. A positive pregnancy test doesn’t necessarily turn off the worry that developed during infertility treatment. You may find yourself analyzing every symptom, counting the days until your next ultrasound, worrying when nausea suddenly disappears, or feeling reassured after an appointment only to start worrying again the next day.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Infertility and IVF involve an enormous amount of uncertainty.
Throughout treatment, you become accustomed to waiting for the next piece of information: How many follicles? How many eggs? How many fertilized? How many embryos? Did the transfer work?
Once you become pregnant, the questions change, but the uncertainty doesn’t necessarily disappear.
Is my beta rising appropriately? Will there be a heartbeat? Is the baby measuring correctly? What will happen at the next ultrasound? Will the genetic testing be okay?
After spending so much time preparing yourself for difficult news, it can be hard to suddenly trust that everything will be okay.
Anxiety during an IVF pregnancy can show up in many different ways, including:
Feeling extremely anxious before ultrasounds or appointments
Constantly checking pregnancy symptoms
Becoming worried when symptoms change or disappear
Seeking frequent reassurance that everything is okay
Feeling afraid to get excited or attached to the pregnancy
Counting down the days until the next milestone
Feeling temporarily relieved after good news, only for the anxiety to return
These experiences can be especially difficult when the people around you don’t quite understand.
Friends and family may say, “Everything looks great!” or “Try to enjoy being pregnant!” They usually mean well. But after infertility, allowing yourself to believe that everything is okay can feel much more complicated.
Sometimes anxiety during pregnancy after IVF comes with another emotion: guilt.
I wanted this so badly. Shouldn’t I be happier?
Other people are still going through treatment. Who am I to complain?
Why can’t I just enjoy being pregnant?
You can be deeply grateful for your pregnancy and still feel anxious. You can feel hopeful and scared. You can be excited about the future while also feeling hesitant to believe that it is really happening.
Infertility doesn’t simply disappear the moment you become pregnant.
Friends, partners, and individual therapists can all be important sources of support. But there can also be something uniquely powerful about sitting in a room with other women who understand why a reassuring ultrasound doesn’t always make the fear disappear.
That is why Pregnancy After IVF is a closed support group.
The same women begin the group together and move through all 10 weeks together. New participants aren't added midway through the group, allowing members to build trust, become comfortable with one another, and develop a genuine sense of community.
You also don't have to share before you're ready. Participants are welcome to talk as much or as little as feels comfortable. Sometimes simply hearing another woman describe the exact thought you've been having can make the experience feel less isolating.
Pregnancy After IVF is a 10-week, in-person support group at Waypoint Psychological Services in Waldwick, New Jersey, created for women in their first trimester who conceived through IVF.
The group follows participants through early pregnancy, with weekly conversations about the experiences that often come up along the way. Topics include graduating from your fertility clinic and transitioning to an OB, pregnancy anxiety, infertility grief and triggers, trusting your body after fertility treatment, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, attachment and allowing yourself to feel hopeful, relationships, building your support system, and preparing for what comes next.
Each 90-minute session includes a check-in, a facilitated discussion, time to share and connect with other participants, and tangible resources to support you throughout pregnancy and as you begin preparing for postpartum.
Pregnancy After IVF meets in person once a week for 10 weeks at Waypoint Psychological Services in Waldwick, NJ.
Sessions are 90 minutes and cost $50 per session.
Because this is a closed group, space is limited. Interested participants complete a brief screening call with the group facilitators before joining.
You spent so much time and energy getting to this pregnancy. You don’t have to navigate what comes next alone.
