“Congratulations on graduating!”
It’s the email you have been waiting for. After months or years of appointments, medications, procedures, bloodwork, and ultrasounds, your fertility clinic is officially sending you off to your OB.
This is good news. Really good news.
For many women, graduating from a fertility clinic after IVF brings a surprising mix of relief, excitement, anxiety, and even sadness. You may be incredibly grateful to have reached this milestone while also wondering how you are possibly supposed to go from being monitored so closely to waiting weeks between appointments.
During IVF, you become accustomed to frequent contact with your fertility clinic. Your care team knows your history. They know what it took to create this pregnancy. And during those first few weeks, frequent bloodwork and ultrasounds may provide information and reassurance.
Then, suddenly, everything changes.
You are transitioning into routine prenatal care. Appointments may be farther apart. Your new provider may not know all the details of your infertility experience. And instead of feeling relieved by needing less medical care, you may feel like your safety net has disappeared.
You might find yourself wondering:
How am I supposed to wait this long until my next appointment?
Who do I call if I’m worried about something?
Will my OB understand how anxious I am after IVF?
How do I go from being a fertility patient to just being…pregnant?
These are exactly the kinds of questions we discuss during Pregnancy After IVF. Transitioning from your fertility clinic to an OB, understanding differences in care, and learning how to advocate for yourself are an intentional part of the group curriculum.
You worked incredibly hard to reach this point. Feeling anxious about leaving your fertility clinic does not mean you aren't grateful to graduate.
For months or years, your fertility team may have been a major part of your life. They have been there for difficult news, big decisions, disappointing cycles, and hopefully, eventually, some very good news.
Leaving that environment can feel emotional.
It is also another reminder that pregnancy after IVF doesn't always feel the way you imagined pregnancy would feel. You may have pictured yourself celebrating every milestone. Instead, you might reach one milestone and immediately begin worrying about the next.
Graduating from your fertility clinic may mean you need less fertility care, but it doesn't necessarily mean you need less support.
This transition is one of the reasons we created Pregnancy After IVF, a closed support group for women in their first trimester who conceived through IVF.
The same women begin the group together and move through all 10 weeks together. That consistency allows participants to build relationships with other women who are navigating many of the same milestones at around the same time.
Each 90-minute session focuses on a topic relevant to pregnancy after IVF, while leaving plenty of time to share and connect. Participants also receive practical, curated resources each week designed to support them throughout pregnancy and as they prepare for postpartum.
Pregnancy After IVF is a 10-week, in-person support group at Waypoint Psychological Services in Waldwick, New Jersey.
Throughout the group, we'll talk about transitioning from your fertility clinic to your OB, pregnancy anxiety, the ways infertility can continue to affect you during pregnancy, trusting your body after treatment, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, relationships, building your support system, allowing yourself to feel hopeful, and preparing for what comes next.
The group meets once a week for 90 minutes and costs $50 per session. This is a self-pay group and insurance is not accepted.
Because this is a closed group, space is limited. Interested participants complete a brief screening call with the group facilitators before joining.
Graduating from your fertility clinic is a huge milestone. You don't have to navigate the transition alone.
